Using 3-5 Singapore Math materials to understand the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

Goal: To increase teachers’ understanding of the content in the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics with the focus on the big ideas in each grade.

Specific topics include:

Emphasis on the key ideas in each semester and each grade level. The “how” of the Singapore Math textbooks, workbooks and teachers‘ guides in teaching Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

CCSS 3.OA 1-9; 3.NBT 1-3; 3.NF 1-3; 3.MD 1-8; 3.G 1-2; Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division; Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division; Solve two-step problems using the four operations and visual models; Develop understanding of fractions as numbers; Represent and interpret data; Reason with shapes and their attributes.

CCSS 4.OA 1-5; 4.NBT 1-6; 4.NF 1-7; 4.MD 1-7; 4.G 1-3; Gain familiarity with factors and multiples; Generate and analyze patterns; Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers; Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understanding of operations on whole numbers; Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions; Represent and interpret data; Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles; Solve multi-step word problems by using visual models.

CCSS 5.OA 1-3; 5.NBT 1-7; 5.NF 1-7; 5.MD 1-5; 5.G 1-4; Analyze patterns and relationships; Understand the place value system; Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions; Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using visual models; Represent and interpret data; Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems; Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
