Description

Have you ever been perplexed at how easily and quickly students appear to backslide and forget basic math facts, even after they have shown mastery on timed tests? Why do many continue to use their fingers and counting strategies to add and subtract well into second grade?  This workshop is designed to address and “break” your students’ habits of over-relying on counting strategies to add and subtract to 20.  Mirroring  the scope and sequence of instruction used in Singapore, we will start with a close look at how using ten frames to visualize numbers within 10 and 20 builds mental math muscle, so that decomposing and composing numbers to find sums and differences is (finally!) released from dependence on counting by ones. How is this possible? You will learn a system of classifying and a method of teaching addition and subtraction facts that is based on the structure of base ten numbers.

Our goal is for you to leave satisfied that you have learned how to change your instruction by implementing the East West Math Method© of Addition and Subtraction to 10 and to 20, designed specifically to build mental math fluency.  Join us to learn how to use your own set of East West Mastery Card© decks, after gaining enough knowledge and practice to teach and assess fluency with the basic facts to 10 and 20.

Note: You will receive decks of the following cards as part of your registration, “Visualizing to 20 Mastery Cards”©, “Addition to 10 Mastery Cards”© “Subtraction to 10 Mastery Cards”© , “Addition to 20 Mastery Cards”©, and “Subtraction to 20 Mastery Cards”©
